Thyroid problems

Thyroid gland is one of the master glands in our body. It is present in the frontal part of the throat. It releases various thyroid hormones which are responsible for body metabolism, body growth, energy distribution in body, release of various other hormones etc.

Mechanism of thyroid hormone release-

Hypothalamus id a part of brain which releases Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH).Through venous plexus TRH reaches pituitary gland in brain. TRH stimulates pituitary gland to release Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) into the blood. TSH in blood stimulates thyroid gland to synthesis Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4).If T3 and T4 are in excess then pituitary gland decreases the synthesis of TSH. Thus the TRH synthesis also is reduced. Hence TSH is inversely proportional to T3 &T4.For example lesser the T3&T4, higher is the TSH and vice versa.

Cause of abnormal thyroid hormones (TH)-

Since hypothalamus part of brain is basically responsible for synthesis of TH; any defective function of brain leads to abnormal synthesis of TH. We can list the causes as follows.
1. Prolonged stress
2. Hormonal imbalance
3. Dietary insufficiency
4. Hereditary tendency

Abnormal thyroid conditions-

1. Hypothyroidism- In case of hypothyroidism the TSH is more than normal owing to less T3 & T4.
2. Hyperthyroidism- In case of hyperthyroidism the TSH will be less than normal owing to more T3 & T4.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism-

1. Poor concentration
2. Fatigue
3. Numbness of hands and feet
4. Weight gain
5. Intolerance to cold
6. Forgetfulness
7. Dry, coarse hair
8. Dry skin
9. Constipation
10. Heavy menses
11. Depression
12. Can rise cholesterol

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism-

1. Fast heart beat
2. Nervousness
3. Scanty menses
4. Warm & sweaty skin
5. Osteoporosis
6. Bulging eyes
7. Prominent thyroid
8. Emotional instability

Normal range of thyroid hormones-

T3 60-181 ng/ml
T4 0.8-1.5 ng/dl
TSH 0.4-4.5 µIU/ml
Diagnosis- Blood test for thyroid profile is the confirmatory test.

Treatment- In old school treatment life hormonal replacement medication is advised. However Homeopathy advises only for a prolonged treatment but never a life long medication.
